Description

When the Heroes of Arrallon passed through hellfire and damnation to complete the quests set out for them by Asmodeus as part of the trial of Shang the Necromancer, one of the many challenges placed before them was a battle against Kollara, the Liche Queen of the Githyanki.  Obviously, they succeeded.  That was over a hundred years ago.  Much has changed with the Githyanki since then.

With Kollara destroyed once and for all, the Githyanki were freed to pursue their own ways, to build a new life for their people.  However, age old hatreds and dark enemies didn’t just disappear.  The Githyanki rededicated themselves to the destruction of not just the Illithid, but of their masters and creators, The Shadows.  So, for many years they built ships and plied the astral void in search of the greatest enemies of all life.  As fate would have it, after many years of constant warfare, they became a race of warriors even greater than what Kollara had envisioned.

When the final battle against The Shadows came, the Githyanki were already solid allies of the Arrallonian Defense Legion.  They shared their shadow tech knowledge and in turn, gained the powers that Arrallonian fluxstone would give their ships.  New generations of battle cruisers and deep space exploration vessels were built.  Ships faster and more powerful than anything in the galaxy began to venture forth from the Apos star system.  When the Ashiri finally came forth and destroyed The Shadows, the ADL and the Githyanki fleets were the ultimate power in the galaxy.

But the Githyanki weren’t just interested in fast ships and big weapons.  They built small as well.  Genetic manipulation of their own race to make them more powerful, able to take on The Shadows and their creations hand-to-hand, had always been a dream of Githyanki scientists.  Many mutants were birthed in special chambers.  The work of the Antarian Republic in genetically engineered super-soldiers was referenced.  And one of their creations even managed to become a famous member of an Arrallonian band of adventurers, the Silver Gryphon Legacy.

Vhaellik gul’Kurak became a commanding general in the final battles against The Shadows.  In The Three Wars, he commanded the Blood Dawn, a Githyanki battle cruiser in a suicidal assault on the Raknid forces streaming out from the asteroid impact crater in the Western Erg of the Symballan desert.  His attack delayed and disrupted the Shadow forces long enough for the Ashiri to be brought into the fight.  A statue stands in the gardens of Kar’Dhaer Academy honoring his sacrifice.  Everyone agrees.  Vhaellik died in that attack,… or did he?

When the ADL fleet was wiped out by Lolth’s Mindspider a few years later, Arrallon all but lost its ability to travel to the stars.  Only a few ships were left, and they were brought back to the Apos star system to patrol the frontier.  What might or might not be happening out there in the galaxy was again a mystery to most.  The Githyanki, as had been the history of their interactions with Arrallon, disappeared once again back into The Void.

*****

Scattered across the multiverse, the Githyanki are many things to many different worlds.  In the Arrallonian universe, they have been soldiers, pirates, and mysterious travelers.  The ancient legends of Githyanki warbands hunting down Githyanki artifacts and killing everything in their path to recover a Silver Sword have been discounted, though one certainly doesn’t wish to come between the Githyanki and what they consider to be their sacred property.  They worship their history and their heroes, not Gods or super powered beings.  They are a people of honor and glory, not religious dogma and philosophical debate.  But even though the Githyanki High Command rules with absolute certainty, they are still individuals, not a hive mind like The Shadows.  From time to time, a unique individual crops up amongst their number.  But even they can’t completely divorce themselves of their racial heritage.  Certain things are simply in their blood.

So it came to pass that one such unique Githyanki found her way through The Void in search of the lost crew of the Blood Dawn.  She, unlike most of the rest of her people, was not content to accept the stories of the ship’s destruction and the fate of its crew.  If they had all died in that crash, what happened to their bodies?  Were they vaporized as the official record would suggest?  Or had some of them managed to escape?  Githyanki can all stride the borders of The Void as they see fit,… and from what she knew, Vhaellik had done just such a thing in past exploits, avoiding the destruction of Ares’ compound in the Central Barrier Mountains.

But where would she start her investigation?  The crater carved by the Shadow asteroid had dug a trench several thousand miles long and hundreds of miles wide.  Only the power of the Avatars prevented the attack from shattering the crust and destroying the planet.  The power of one of the great artifacts of the Symballan Empire had shattered the stone wall and flooded the crater, creating the Symballan Sea.  Could the debris of the ship and what was left of its crew be down there somewhere, scattered across the ocean floor?  The Symballan Sea was well known for its random events, wild weather, strange creatures, and temporal fluctuations.  Perhaps one who could wield both psionics and the magic of an Eldritch Warlock could travel there.

So, Raisira Zendallyn came to Arrallon, searching for a long, lost cousin’s remains.  She crossed the Symballan Sea and the Empire itself a half dozen times.  She ventured into the Void in the border between realms searching.  And still she has found only fragments of clues.  She is convinced that Vhaellik and his elite commandos are still alive, somewhere,… but where?
