Description

The first journey into Old Calladon was pretty much as they’d expected.  They met with the Necromonger’s apprentice, a strange and quiet little man named Draesem Delkaldyn.  He had opened the way for them into Old Calladon’s cursed halls.  They dropped down inside the old Elven Temple at the north end of the first level, still one of the few safe places for adventurers to rest in all of Old Calladon.  Kami, however, pointed out that an evil necromancer had been the one who’d opened up the passage and sent them in.  Maybe the place wasn’t as safe as they thought.  When Ghedryn D’Lafleure simply walked through the door, they knew the old magical defenses on the place were not as they had once been.  She assured them that only The Nine could enter here, as they now controlled all of Old Calladon’s magics.  With images of the Warlich Lord Orlangor dropping by for a chat, that didn’t make any of them feel any better.

What followed was much as they’d expected.  They’d battled on for what seemed like days.  The old adventurer’s credo of “clearing out the dungeon” never applied here.  Old Calladon refreshed itself with alarming regularity.  Random teleporters or magical conjurations kept the place well stocked and deadly.  Even traps had a habit of moving about randomly, resetting themselves at odd times and changing from one encounter to the next.  The place had long been considered the adventurer’s proving ground.  It had another appellation, the adventurer’s graveyard.  But after an extended battle against Lolth’s demon armies on the first level, the destruction of literally millions of spiders of every kind, and the liberation of a rather significant Bebilith’s horde, they retreated back to the Elven Shrine for a rest.  Laden as they were with treasures, it was time to return to New Calladon and continue their investigation into the Carellonian traitor.

They’d made no progress in either New Calladon before leaving for the dungeons of The Nine, nor in Old Calladon itself.  Perhaps a day off and a little wandering about town might aid them in that regard.  Meanwhile, there were several bags of holding needing emptying and numerous magics to sell.  New Calladon had been the adventurer’s haven almost since its creation.  Wizards and alchemists had set up shops here.  A Dwarven forge was erected on the west side to handle armor requests, the reforging of broken swords and other metal works as needed.  Sages and scribes sold scrolls of every type.  Several powerful temples offered healing and the occasional potion or three.  And a vast assortment of ladies and gentlemen of the night were available not only for the entrainment of government officials, but any adventurer with the gold to pay for their services.  Unlike most bands of adventurers, however, the Night Raptors didn’t just have their own Erotics,… they were the very, very close friends of Lacy Legend and her girls.  So, as trips into the north went, they always had a free place to stay when they were in town.

    -----

Selling Drow weaponry was difficult in many places as there was little use for swords and armor, even of such strength, that simply melted away if left in the sun for a day.  But New Calladon had long ago learned how to deal with such things.  There were shops and restaurants and hotels guarded against the sun’s rays even at noon on the brightest days of summer.  There were Drovik weaponsmasters and Deurgar armorers and Svirfneblin illusionists who would deal in UnderDark goods.  So when they arrived back in town with several thousand pounds of weapons, armor and assorted trinkets, they quickly unloaded them.  This being Damaris’ first big haul since she’d left the Carellonian army, she went a little nuts in the weapons shops.  A new set of Bracers, a Quiver of Ehlonna, and,…

“Where did you get that sword?  It’s just like the one a friend of mine had years ago.  It’s a Tiefling blade.  You never find one like it outside of the Abyss.  How much?”
